S 4877 – Protecting and Preserving Social Security Act 

This bill was introduced by Senator Mazle Hirono (D-HI) in 2024.  Congress has been warned for decades that if they don’t take action, benefits will be cut by as much as 25%.  Now that deadline is less than 8 years away.  Passage of this legislation will protect benefits from cuts and strengthen the social security system.  The related bill in the House is HR 9300 introduced by Rep Jill Tokuda (D-HI).

HR 7084 – You Earned It, You Keep It Act

This bill was introduced by Rep Angie Craig (D-MN) in December of 2024 and currently has 14 co-sponsors.  Passage of this legislation will put an end to the taxation of Social Security benefits, putting more money back into the pockets of retired Americans.  A related bill is HR 9359.

HR 4583 – Social Security 2100 Act

This bill was introduced by Representative John Larson (D-CT) on July 12, 2023 and currently has 188 cosponsors.  The corresponding Senate bill, S2280, was introduced by Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and has four cosponsors.  

This bill modifies the Social Security system, particularly in terms of benefit calculations, fund administration, and beneficiary resources.

It also modifies benefit calculations for specific individuals, including by temporarily increasing benefits for widows or widowers in two-income households; and allowing children of a deceased, disabled, or retired worker to remain eligible for benefits through age 25 if they are full-time students.

The bill also modifies the financing and administration of the Social Security trust funds by combining the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund and the Federal Disability Insurance Trust Fund into a single Social Security Trust Fund.  For the first time, it would subject income over $400,000 to the Social Security payroll taxes.

Finally, the bill establishes requirements relating access to social security services and resources.
