Aging in Place

Aging in place is not a new concept, but rather a standard in much of the world. However, it has recently been rebranded as a new trend for seniors that don’t have the benefit of living with their families. Recent studies tell us that up to 90% of seniors hope to continue living independently in their homes for as long as possible.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2034, there will be more people over 65 than under 18 for the first time in history. The number of centenarians (those over 100 years old) is expected to quadruple. Our population has been steadily getting older for decades due to Baby Boomers and rising life expectancy. Costs and shortages for retirement communities are outpacing need and ability. The costs for retirement communities range from $1,500 to $10,000 a month, while memory care can be $12,000 per month. This does not consider the one-time fees of several thousand dollars to get on a the waiting list, which could be years long. The primary differences in cost are indicative of unit size/location, amenities and care needs.

Historically, seniors simply stayed in their homes until the couldn’t. Today, we know that there are numerous home design and community modifications that can be made to allow seniors to remain in their homes up to an additional 10-20+ years! Your personal situation will dictate what changes should be implemented and the difference it will make.

  • Physical modifications to your home – these include grab bars, wider doorways, non-slip flooring and step free entrances.
  • Support resources – in-home support for health, home improvement/maintenance and basic caregiving
  • Health issues – stay on top of all medical issues before they interfere in independence.
  • Financial concerns – given the costs associated with many of these, planning in advance can spread out expenses
  • Technology – numerous tools like medical alert systems, medicine dispensers, even GPS tracking, with more things being invented all the time.
  • Community support – attending events, in home visits, check-ins and transportation are a key component of independent living.

There are numerous resources for aging in place, this is a situation that is definitely not a one-size fits all. Your needs, budget and wants will all impact the steps you take to increase your independence safely.
